Currently reading this book on the role of infectious diseases in shaping human history. It’s more of a speculative essay than a history book- a suggestion not to forget the role of disease when interpreting historical patterns- but it’s an interesting take. One example is a theory that early urbanization came about in part because agricultural workers were exposed to parasitic infections that elite warriors were not, so they became easier to rule.
The Boitin Stone Dance is a prehistoric site near Rostock, Germany, thought to have been a burial or calendar site and later a meeting place for the Germanic thing, or elder assembly. The stones were set upright again in the modern age.
