…through most of the medieval period, the bow was scorned by the gentry as a war weapon for themselves. When its great effectiveness was demonstrated in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it was immediately condemned by the church. In 1120 bows were prohibited in Flanders, in an effort to keep peace. In 1139, the Second Lateran Council forbade the employment of the bow and bowmen against other Christians. The bow was seen as a weapon not proper to Christians and gentlemen…
One reason for hostility to the bow was precisely its effectiveness. Nobles could be killed by low-class archers, without even an opportunity for retaliation.
